Daily storms to strike eastern India as stifling heat grips rest of country

Deadly thunderstorms and temperatures as high as 46 C (115 F) were felt across parts of India over the weekend.
Powerful thunderstorms lashed parts of northeastern India, including Bihar state where at least 11 people were killed on Sunday, according to India Today.
Two children were struck and killed by thunderstorms on Sunday after multiple thunderstorms moved through the area.
India 4/30

Locations across northeastern India will have to contend with additional showers and thunderstorms in the coming days.
Residents of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal should be on alert for daily thunderstorms.
If you are outdoors and hear thunder, quickly take cover indoors to avoid lightning.
The thunderstorms will lower temperatures across the region with daily highs of 31-33 C (88-92 F) from eastern Bihar into West Bengal.
Farther west, temperatures will peak near 38 C (100 F) in interior Odisha, western Jharkhand and western Bihar.
While northeast India has a reprieve from dangerous heat, central and northwest India will continue to bake in an intense heat wave this week.
Temperatures peaked near 46 C (115 F) in several locations across central and northwest India this weekend and similar temperatures will grip these areas in the coming days.
Locations from Hyderabad northward to Raipur and Bhopal will be in the heart of the dangerous heat.
Much of Gujarat and Rajasthan will also endure daily bouts of intense heat.
The National Capital Region (NCR) will be on the cusp of sweltering conditions with locations south and west of New Delhi enduring the harshest heat this week.
A storm passing to the north could ignite a couple of showers and thunderstorms across the NCR on Wednesday and Thursday which would bring relief from the heat.
However, these storms could also bring damaging winds and blowing dust resulting in poor visibility and dangerous travel conditions.
This storm system will depart by Friday, allowing temperatures to climb back to dangerous levels across all of the NCR. This heat will continue to build into this weekend.
Bouts of intense heat are expected to continue across central and northern India in the coming weeks until monsoon rain arrives.
AccuWeather meteorologists are expecting a normal arrival of monsoon rain this year, with rain advancing from southern India in late May to the NCR by late June.

Royal Wedding outlook: Rain appears unlikely as typical spring temperatures are predicted

Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle will marry on May 19 in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, located outside of London. The royal couple announced the engagement on Nov. 27, 2017.
Temperature, rain, wind and sunshine are the four main weather conditions that could affect the wedding festivities.

The normal high temperature in London for May 19 is 18.5 C (66.3 F), and the normal low is 8.5 C (47.3 F). With mostly normal temperatures throughout April, AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys expects the high temperature to be about 17 C (62.6 F), right around the normal.
Although there was a heat wave in April, resulting in the warmest London Marathon on record, Roys does not think there will be another for the royal wedding festivities.
A heat wave in London is classified as five or more consecutive days in which the maximum temperature climbs above the maximum normal temperature by 5 degrees Celsius, based on the World Meteorological Organization scale.

“The most important thing is not necessarily temperature, but actually rather if there is any rain or not,” Roys said.
Rain could significantly impact events of the weekend, but Roys does not believe that it will. The average amount of rainfall in London on May 19 is 1.3 millimeters (0.05 of an inch).
Seven percent of the rain that London gets during the year occurs in May, so it is not considered a wet month, according to Roys.

For May 19 over the last 20 years, 10 dates have recorded precipitation, usually in the form of a brief shower.
“That day itself is not a true wet day,” Roys said.
Only once over the last 20 years has there been more than a tenth of an inch of precipitation on May 19, and that was in 2003.
When it comes to rain, there is a very low probability for storms, but brief showers in the area can't be ruled out, Roys said.
The royal family will also be lucky to not have to deal with high winds as “the threat for wind is low to nonexistent,” according to Roys.
The threat for windstorms with gusts over 50 mph is greater in the fall and early spring, but not as much of a threat in late May. The average wind speed for this time of year is 6 to 8 knots around the London metro.
In addition, May is a relatively sunny month for the London area, which sees about 190 to 200 hours of sunshine throughout the month, according to Roys.

Damp weather to unfold for some May Day festivities in Germany

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
April 30, 2018, 10:14:47 AM EDT

May Day is celebrated across Germany in a variety of ways ranging from speeches and protests to parades and celebrations.
With most of these traditions taking place outdoors, the weather will play an important role in planning and enjoying this longstanding public holiday.
On the heels of the warmest April in several years, May will start off cooler with more seasonable temperatures across the country.
Germany1 4/30

High temperatures will range from near 10 C (50 F) in northwest Germany to 18 C (64 F) near the border with Poland and across southeast Bavaria.
Normal high temperatures in early May range from 15-17 C (59-62 F) throughout the country.
Some locations will have to deal with a damp morning as light rain and drizzle fall across northwest Germany.
Locations at risk for a wet start to the day include Cologne, Dortmund, Bremen and Hamburg.
Elsewhere, mostly dry weather will prevail throughout the day with a mixture of clouds and sunshine.
Anyone planning to extend their celebration into Tuesday night can expect dry weather.
Anyone heading outdoors during the evening may want to have a jacket handy as temperatures quickly fall.
Overnight lows will fall to or below 4 C (39 F) across much of central and northern Germany and hover a few degrees higher farther south.

Late-week severe weather risk to extend from Texas to New York state, perhaps Maine

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
April 30, 2018, 3:00:43 PM EDT

Following multiple days of severe weather over the central United States into Wednesday night, the threat of severe thunderstorms will continue in Texas and may extend into New England.
A press of cool air across the North Central states will allow the zone of severe weather to push eastward across parts of the middle Mississippi and Ohio valleys as well as the lower Great Lakes region.
As will be the case on most days through Wednesday, the storm potential on Thursday is likely to cover the spectrum of severe weather ranging from damaging winds and large hail to flash flooding, frequent lightning strikes and a few tornadoes.
Static Thursday Severe

Cities at risk for severe thunderstorms from Thursday afternoon to Thursday night will include Buffalo, New York, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago and Peoria, Illinois; St. Louis, Springfield and Kansas City, Missouri; Fort Smith and Little Rock, Arkansas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Dallas.
Commuters and airline passengers in these areas and others in the expected swath of thunderstorms should anticipate delays. People spending time outdoors should keep an eye out for rapidly changing weather conditions and move indoors at the first sign of a storm.
"During Thursday afternoon and evening, the greatest threat for a few isolated tornadoes may extend from northeastern Texas to southern Missouri," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Steve Travis.
The risk of heavy, gusty and locally severe thunderstorms will exist on Friday as well.
Static Friday Storms 3 pm

Friday's potential for strong to severe thunderstorms is likely to extend from parts of the Ohio and Tennessee valleys to the central Appalachians and New England.
The risk may extend as far to the north as Maine on Friday afternoon and evening.
The press of cool air forecast to settle over the North Central states at midweek will expand slowly southward and eastward this weekend to end the severe weather potential from the southern Plains, Midwest and Northeast.
However, the risk of heavy, gusty thunderstorms at minimum will finally reach the southern Appalachians and Piedmont areas on Saturday.
Warmth may try to hold its ground in the Southeast this weekend, so the advance of thunderstorms may be a slow process in the region.

Evacuations ordered, structures destroyed as over 8,000-acre Tinder Fire explodes in Arizona

ByMore than 500 homes are under threat from the rapidly expanding Tinder Fire in Arizona, which exploded from 500 to 8,000 acres in the span of a few hours on Sunday. The fire grew to more than 8,600 acres on Monday and is 0 percent contained as of 3:30 p.m. local time, according to InciWeb.
The wind-driven blaze, which originated on April 27 about 1.5 miles northeast of the Blue Ridge Reservoir in Coconino County, has triggered a number of evacuations and road closures in nearby local communities, according to InciWeb.
All communities north, east and west of Highway 87 were ordered to evacuate, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

No injuries were reported as of 5 a.m. local time, but some structures have been lost, according to InciWeb. Officials have yet to release information on exactly how many structures were impacted as they continue to assess damage.
Coconino County health officials are urging people in the fire's vicinity, particularly those with preexisting health conditions, to take precautions against inhaling wildfire smoke.
High winds contributing to the fire's growth will likely continue to exacerbate containment efforts for the more than 500 personnel working to contain the blaze.

"Monday will be a bad day, as the winds will be frequently blowing past 15-25 mph, with higher gusts," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey.
"These winds will generally continue into Tuesday before calming down somewhat on Wednesday into the remainder of the week," Duffey said.
Because the wind direction will remain rather steady over the next few days, this will not be the worst-case scenario, as fire spread should be more predictable than it would be with changing wind directions, according to Duffey.
"Some precipitation will attempt to move into the region as early as Tuesday night," said Duffey. "While it should be light, rising dew points will help to subdue fire activity, especially overnight."
The fire's cause remains under investigation. Ashley Williams, AccuWeather staff writer
