SEVERE WEATHER Updated Jan. 31, 2020 3:57 AM
As millions of people flock to South Florida prior to Super Bowl LIV this weekend, Mother Nature may be the first to call an audible as thunderstorms are expected to threaten plans leading up to the big game.
A storm system that is expected to brush by the East Coast to start the weekend will first take shape over the Southeast and Gulf of Mexico through the day on Friday. While a good portion of the Southeast can expect wet weather Friday, much of Florida will remain dry during the daytime hours.
As the disturbance continues its trek eastward, the threat for thunderstorms could kick off some trouble Friday night across the Sunshine State.
Showers and thunderstorms will rush in from the Gulf, intentionally targeting places like Fort Myers, Naples and the Keys Friday evening. As the stormy weather comes ashore, the threat of torrential downpours, gusty winds, frequent lightning and even a brief tornado could be realized.
As the night progresses, late-night partygoers on Florida's Atlantic coast will want to keep an eye on the sky for any flashes of lightning off in the distance. If you are able to hear thunder in the wake of the lightning flash, you have received Mother Nature's version of a two-minute warning to get inside.
The highest threat for damaging wind gusts, torrential downpours and even a brief tornado touchdown Friday night will generally reside from West Palm beach southward to the Keys.
Boaters in the area Friday night and Saturday will also want to monitor the weather closely, as waterspouts will be possible as well.
Unfortunately, the thunderstorm activity Friday night may only conclude the first half of the stormy weather expected across the region.
While central Florida may continue to deal with occasional showers and a rumble of thunder Saturday morning, much of South Florida, including Miami, may start the day off on a dry note.
If so, this may bring a false sense of security across the Miami area as many outdoor venues begin setting up for the day's festivities.

As the day progresses and warmth and humidity builds, another round of thunderstorms may collapse the dry pocket of weather anticipated during the morning. With thousands of people expected to partake in the scheduled outdoor events across the area, a secondary plan of action may be needed in case the outdoor events get sacked due to inclement weather.
Event organizers will need to keep a close eye through the day on Saturday across Miami as the safety of the visitors would not want to be put in jeopardy. Remember, when thunder roars, head indoors.
Along with the localized threat for severe weather through the first half of the weekend, flooding in typical low-lying locales may occur as well, something that the city of Miami and surrounding areas knows all too well.
Aside from a lingering shower or two Saturday evening, an expanding area of high pressure moving into Florida is expected to punt the unsettled weather off the Atlantic coast before the big game on Sunday.
In the wake of the messy weather to start the weekend, much of Florida and the rest of the Southeast can expect dry and settled conditions for Super Bowl Sunday. During the day, a mostly sunny sky, temperatures in the lower 70s F and low humidity levels are expected to grace South Florida.
While Mother Nature will call the plays through the first half of the weekend across Florida, fans and players alike will elect to receive dry and settled weather for the Super Bowl.
Quiet conditions are expected through the entirety of the big game on Sunday, with temperatures sitting comfortably in the middle 60s F around kickoff and slowly falling to around 60 F by the time a winning team is declared.
