Rounds of heavy rain to bring flooding concerns to southern Europe

Updated Nov. 5, 2019 12:44 PM

A parade of storms across southern Europe will increase the risk of flash flooding across the region.
The first round of rain arrived across southern Europe on Tuesday as a storm system moved into the region from the west.
Periods of rain tracked across Corsica and Sardinia and into the west coast of Italy throughout the day. A couple of thunderstorms also developed along the central coast of Italy, near Rome.
The cold front associated with this system will push south across southern Europe into Wednesday, spreading rain farther south along the coast of Italy.
Meanwhile, another area of rain across the Alps moved into the Balkan Peninsula on Tuesday, drenching coastal areas from Slovenia to northern Albania.
Rain is forecast to continue across Montenegro and Albania on Wednesday then spread to the western coast of Greece on Thursday.
With periods of rain, some expected to be heavy, lingering across this area from Wednesday into Thursday night, widespread rainfall totals of 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) are likely. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 150 mm (6 inches) is possible, especially in the higher elevations of the region.
While flooding rainfall will be the biggest threat across the region, locally strong thunderstorms can produce gusty winds, hail and perhaps an isolated tornado.
As rain is tapering off across the Balkans Thursday night, the next storm system will move from western Europe into the Mediterranean Sea.
Once again, southwesterly flow around this system will create two areas of rainfall over western Italy and the Balkans while influence from moisture over the Mediterranean Sea will help to fuel downpours.
Periods of rain will arrive in Corsica and across northern areas of the west coast of Italy Thursday night and into Friday before expanding to the central coast Friday afternoon.

Rain will be delayed in the Balkan Peninsula with the heaviest amounts arriving in Slovenia and Croatia on Friday.
Periods of rain will spread to the rest of the western Balkans into the weekend as the storm continues to push through the region.
An additional 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) of rainfall is possible across these areas with this second round of rain.
The risk of flash flooding and mudslides will increase across these areas with each storm system, especially in locations that get repeat downpours or prolonged periods of rain.
While damaging wind gusts are not expected with these systems, saturated soil from the prolonged wet weather will make it easier for trees to fall over, which can cause damage, power outages and travel delays.
This will not be the last round of heavy rainfall for southern Europe.
Over the weekend, a storm system will track over northwestern Europe and slide into the Mediterranean Sea. As the storm wraps up, it will pull moisture north and can produce the heaviest rainfall of the week across similar areas.
The risk of flooding will only increase as the storm may linger over the area through the beginning half of next week as it continues to bring periods of rain to the region.
