Severe Tropical Storm Maliksi to deliver glancing blow to Japan this week

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather sSevere Tropical Storm Maliksi will deliver a glancing blow to Japan early this week as it passes near the country.
The Philippine government first declared that the tropical disturbance had become Tropical Depression Domeng on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recognized the system as Tropical Storm Maliksi. This name is used by the rest of the international community when referencing this tropical system.
Maliksi briefly became a typhoon on Sunday, local time, but has since weakened back to a severe tropical storm.
After inundating the Philippines with frequent thunderstorms and heavy rain from Thursday to Saturday, this system will track northeastward and pass to the east of Japan.
Conditions will improve across the northern Philippines through the middle of the week. However, lingering downpours are still possible in western Luzon.
Maliksi will track east of Taiwan with only a slight uptick in rainfall hinting at the nearby storm.

The system will then take a northeast track to east of the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan. Fortunately, the strongest winds are expected to remain well offshore as Maliksi sweeps along the coasts of Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu.
As the storm tracks to the east of the islands, it will bring heavy rain and frequent thunderstorms along with rough surf and rip currents, with gusty conditions impacting coastal areas.
Many areas of central and northern Japan will see 25-75 mm (1-3 inches) of rain through Tuesday. Travel delays are likely for the Monday morning commute in Tokyo with rain falling heavily at times.
Communities along the east coast of Honshu will have a gusty wind, in addition to the rain. There is, however, not expected to be any wind damage as Maliksi passes well offshore.
Conditions will improve across the country on Wednesday.enior meteorologist
